Kol Todah. Sermon of Rabbi Tzadok Reich in the city of Buchach on the occasion of the rescue of Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria and King of Bohemia and Hungary, from an assassination attempt. Lemberg, 1853. “A Voice of Thanksgiving for the great deliverance that came to all the peoples of Austria, for Hashem saved the life of the pious Emperor Franz Joseph I, may his glory be exalted, from the hand of a murderer who raised his hand against him to strike him dead.” Sermon of Rabbi Tzadok Reich, delivered in the Great Synagogue of Buchach before the congregation and government dignitaries in 1853. Lemberg, 1853. 7 pages. Rabbi Tzadok Reich of Buchach (near Monastyrys'ka) — an outstanding Torah scholar distinguished in Torah and fear of Heaven, mentioned in the responsa of the Gedolei Yisrael of his generation. He published the Sefer Panim Yafos and additional works. Historical background: Emperor Franz Joseph was highly regarded by the Jews. He granted them civil rights and permitted them to organize themselves into recognized communities. On February 18, 1853, a Hungarian tailor attacked Emperor Franz Joseph and attempted to assassinate him with a knife. The Emperor's aide-de-camp struck the assailant with a sword, and the Emperor's life was saved. Following news of the Emperor's rescue, prayers and public assemblies were held throughout Jewish communities, including the gathering in Buchach at which Rabbi Reich delivered the sermon presented here.
