THE PRIVATE ARCHIVE OF RABBI YAAKOV MAZEH (1859–1924) - A comprehensive collection from the personal archive of Rabbi Yaakov Mazeh – one of the central figures in Jewish rabbinical leadership in Russia during the first half of the 20th century. Rabbi Mazeh was a rabbi, author, jurist, and prominent Zionist activist, who served as the chief rabbi of Moscow from 1893 until his death. Throughout his life, he was involved in Zionist, legal, and cultural initiatives and was one of the founders of the Habima Theater. He is especially remembered for his courageous expert testimony in the Beilis trial. The archive includes thousands of written items preserved in an old Russian suitcase, reflecting the breadth of his activities and involvement in diverse areas – rabbinate, education, law, journalism, Zionism, and culture. Partial description of the archive’s contents: 1. Handwritten personal diaries, including journals, personal memoirs, reflections, Torah insights, sermon drafts, calculations, tables, and more. 2. Dozens of personal letters written by Rabbi Mazeh to family members and public figures from various periods. 6. Hundreds of meticulously preserved press clippings, some with annotations or markings. 7. Printed personal business cards bearing his signature, in original packaging. And much more.
