Karlsbad, also Carlsbad, and in Czekoslovakia called Karlovy Vary.
Their baths were regarded as therapeutic already in the 1500s.
Encyclopedia Judaica reports: "Carlsbad became popular among Jews as a resort and
a rendezvous of matchmakers and as a meeting place for rabbis and communal leaders."
The illustration is of a Hasidic Jew in traditional garb. He carries an umbrella which was
supposed to lend him some respectability, like a cane. The image is not necessarily meant to be flattering.
Mailed 24 August 1901. The message, written on a Saturday, says in part:
"Dad goes to the pool and most of the people that he meets there look like this".
Very fresh condition.
