Laurence Oliphant (1829-1888) was, among others, a Member of Parliament, author, intelligence agent, mystic and Christian Zionist. Around 1878, Oliphant devised the Gilead Plan, which aimed to develop a Jewish agricultural colony in Palestine. In 1879 he sailed to investigate the conditions for the establishment of the settlement, and accumulated funding for the purchase of land and the settling of Jewish refugees in the Galilee region. Includes nine illustrations and a large, folding color map at the end of the book. Beautiful cover with ornaments in gold and silver. English, 538 pages, 23X15 cm.
