Bloch, Folio - Plumier's Umber - Sciaena Plumieri. 306
This striking, originally hand-colored folio engraving is from Marcus Elieser Bloch’s Ichthyologie, ou Histoire Naturelle Generale et Particuliere des Poissons. The work was published in Berlin between 1782 and 1795 by the author by Hesse and others. "Artistic and scientifically exemplary illustrations of all fish known at the time." (Wilhelm Junk)

Ichthyologie is noted as "... the finest illustrated work on fishes ever produced. The plates, by a variety of artists and engravers, are outstandingly coloured, and are heightened with gold, silver, and bronze to produced the metallic sheen of fish scales." (Nissen)

Bloch was a medical doctor before he became fascinated with fish later in his life. He collected several of his own specimens to produce this famous work which described over 200 species of fish.

Provenance: Private collection in North Rhine-Westphalia. Previously owned by Hessian chemist Waldemar Schwalbe (1882-1943).

The work is in good to excellent condition overall. This particular plate was from a fold out edition so there is a flattened binder's crease from how it was originally bound and occasional offset, the image is still the folio size. Some of the plates from this work were occasionally trimmed into the plate mark during the binding process. There is also occasionally binding residue along one edge. There may be a few minor imperfections to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
