Rumphius - Lobsters. 4
This strong sea life engraving is from Georg Eberhard Rumpf (Rumphius)'s D'Amboinsche rariteitkamer. The work was published in Amsterdam by F. Halma in 1705. The engravings were by A. Van Buysen, J. Lamsvelt, J. Deur, and J. De Later. It is the earliest work to feature specimens from the South Pacific, and was comprehensive in its depictions of crustacea, exotic shells, and minerals.

It has been speculated that the engravings were completed after illustrations by the acclaimed Maria Sybilla Merian. "The illustrations never bore Merian's name (only those of the engravers Andries van Buysen, Jacobus de Later, J. Deur and J. Lamsvelt), but she mentioned them in a 1702 letter, and her drawings survived in St. Petersburg." (Wood, 546, Christies)

Georg Eberhard Rumphius (1627-1702) was a botanist and naturalist. He joined the military branch of the Dutch East India Company in 1652, and from there he devoted his life to the study of natural history in Moluccas, Indonesia. The illustrations were first published in 1705 under the Dutch title D'Amboinsche rariteitkamer. The work included engravings of crustaceans shells, and sea urchins.
