Reichenow - Parrots. 16 - This hand-colored folio lithograph is from the first edition of Dr. Anton Reichenow’s work Parrots of the World or Vogelbilder aus fernen Zonen . The work was published by Theodor Fischer in Kasse, Germany between 1878 and 1883. The highly decorative prints feature striking, rich hand-coloring. Dr. Anton Reichenow (1847-1941) was a German ornithologist and herpetologist. He worked for nearly 50 years and made great contributions to ornithological studies at the turn of the 20th century. Gustav Mutzel (1839-1893) was a famous German wildlife artist. He is credited for the drawings in this work which were drawn in a lively manner with remarkable accuracy. The parrots featured were all the then known species from Australia, New Guinea, Asia, Philippines, Africa and America.
