Hartlaub's Birds of Madagascar - Volume with Wood Engraving of Dodo Bird - This rare, first edition volume is Gustav Hartlaub's The Birds of Madagascar... or Die Vögel Madagascars und der benachbarten Inselgruppen. The work detailed the avifauna of Madagascar and the surrounding islands. It is bound in original green canvas with gilt illustrated cover illustration of dodo and gilt embossed title to spine with marbled boards. The work included a newly discovered original illustration by wood engraving of the dodo bird by R. Savry. Gustav Hartlaub was a German physician and ornithologist. He published a few works on the birds of Africa.
