Linden's .. Iconographie des Orchidees - 9 Volumes with 813 Orchid Lithographs - This remarkable work on orchids is Jean-Jules Linden's Lindenia: Iconographie des Orchidees . The work was published in Ghent, Belgium by F. Meyer-van Loo & Eugene van der Haeghe between 1885 and 1903. There are 17 volumes bound in 9 with 813 orchid lithographs. The volumes are bound in early 20th century half brown morocco, marble boards, spine with raised bands forming six compartments, lettered gilt in the second and third compartments by F. Saulnier. This is the complete work with the rarely found last four parts for volume 17. The work was published at the height of Belgium’s “orchid fever” or “orchidelerium.” The lithographs were printed in color and finished by hand. They were done by some of the best botanical lithographers of the time including Severeyns and De Pannemaeker after the work of Alfred Goosen and others. Lindenia was one of the most important publications on orchids featuring stunning, high quality color plates. Jean-Jules Linden (1817-1898) was a Belgian botanist, explorer, horticulturist, and businessman. Linden travelled extensively finding over 1100 species of orchids and importing them to Belgium for cultivation. He founded a nursery in Brussels with his son and published Lindenia .
