Two Volumes with 108 Photogravures of the Art of Rosa Bonheur - This attractive two volume work with 108 photogravures is Catalogue des aquarelles, dessins, gravures par Rosa Bonheur et des tableaux, aquarelles, bronzes, gravures composant la collection particulière de Rosa Bonheur . Leon Roger-Miles authored the work cataloging the impressive artwork of Rosa Bonheur. The work was published by Galerie Georges Petit in Paris in 1900. It is bound in full dark blue Morocco leather, spines gilt in compartments, boards with numerous gilt fillets including a thick fillet of intertwining flowers, gilt roll tool turn-ins, marbled endpapers, and top edges gilt. The bindings were done by Leighton. There is a frontispiece portrait of Rosa Bonheur after Anna Elizabeth Klumpke. Titles, index, 245 pages, and original front wrappers. The two volumes contain 108 photogravures featuring the art of Rosa Bonheur. Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) was a French artist best known for her animal paintings. She is considered to be one of the greatest female artists of the 19th century. She was an iconic feminist figure. She is believed to have broadcast her lesbian sexuality and wore trousers by special police permission. She was a successful artist when women rarely were educated or celebrated in that field to that point in history. She was trained by her father, a drawing teacher, and visiting the Louvre regularly to learn more. She visited slaughterhouses to study animal anatomy to further perfect the details of her work.
