Keating & Long's Narrative of an Expedition - 2 Volumes with 1 Folding Map & 15 Engravings - This two volume, first edition work is William H. Keating's Narrative of an Expedition to the Source of St. Peter's River, Lake Winnepeek, Lake of the Woods, etc. etc. Performed in the Year 1823... The work was published in Philadelphia in 1824 by H. C. Carey & I. Lea. It is bound in contemporary calf, rebacked, morocco spine labels gilt lettered. The volumes include half-titles, 1 folding map, 15 engravings (mostly by Hill after drawings by Samuel Seymour. The large fold out map is of the great lakes. Also included is a chart of the Miami River and numerous engravings of Native Americans. The work is the primary source of information on Stephen H. Long's important second expedition that surveyed headwaters of the Mississippi River. Field describes the work as ”almost a cyclopedia of material, relating to the Indians of the explored territory. Nothing escaped the attention of the gentlemen who accompanied the expedition; and their statements regarding the customs, character, and numbers of the Sioux and Chippeway tribes, are among the most valuable we have of those people.” William H. Keating (1799-1844) was an American geologist. He graduated and served as a professor of mining and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania. He was appointed the geologist and historiographer of the expedition.
