Dumont - Pair of Seal Engravings - This originally hand-colored, folio engraving is from Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont D'Urville's Voyage au Pole Sud et dan l'Oceanie sur les corvettes l'Astrolabe et la Zelee... The work was published in Paris by Gide et Cie between 1841 and 1853. Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont D'Urville (1790-1842) was a French explorer and naval officer. For thirty-eight months he explored the south and western Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica. Several seaweeds, plants, and shrubs are named after him, as well as D'Urville Island. Dumont D'Urville proposed continued exploration in the Pacific in 1837 after the success of Weddell & Wilkes's expeditions. His instructions were to explore the Antarctic and claim the South magnetic pole. They were blocked by ice in 1838 and discovered Adelie land on their second attempt in 1840. Dumont D'Urville's expeditions reached Marquesas, Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, Guam, Fiji, New Guinea, Borneo, New Zealand, and Tasmania.
