Visscher - Map of Flanders, Belgium [Comitatus Flandria] - This is beautiful map of Flanders by Claesz Jansz Visscher entitled Comitatus Flandria . The map was published in Amsterdam in 1652. The map is based upon Vans Langrens map of Flanders first published in 1595. Visscher first issued the map between 1611 and 1621. It is elaborately decorated with city views, costumed figures, coats of arms, and portraits of Albrecht VII and his wife, Isabella Clara Eugenia. Claes Janszoon Visscher (1586-1652) was a Dutch Golden Age draughtsman, engraver, cartographer, and publisher. His son, Nicholas I, and grandson, Nicholas II, were also established mapmakers. Visscher maps are likely best known for a fine panelled border. The maps are also known for their exceptional engraving. Nicolaes (Nicholas) Johannis Visscher (1618-1709) was a Dutch engraver, cartographer, and publisher. He came from a prominent family of cartographers including his father, Claes Janszoon Visscher, and son, Nicholas II. Visscher maps are known for their exceptional engraving.
