Saint-Hilaire - 4 Quadruped Lithographs (Wild Boar, Jackal, Coati) - This handsome lithograph is from Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire & Frederic Cuvier's Histoire naturelle des mammiferes . The work was published in Paris by A. Belin between 1818 and 1842. The lithographs are after illustrations by Jean Charles Werner. Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844) was a French naturalist. He established the principle of ”unity of composition”. He is considered a predecessor of the evo-devo evolutionary concept. He argued the possibility of transmutation of species over time through research in comparative anatomy, paleontology, and embryology. He was the father of Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire who followed in his studies of natural history and publishing.
