Mortier after Jaillot - Map of North America [Amerique Septentrionale] - This magnificent originally hand-colored engraved map is from Pieter Mortier's Atlas nouveau contenant toutes les parties du monde . The work was published in Paris circa 1696. The map was based on the work of French cartographer, Alexis-Hubert Jaillot. He modeled his map after the map of Nicolas Sanson published in 1656. Pieter Mortier (1669-1711) was an Dutch mapmaker, engraver, and bookseller. He was the son of a French refugee. He was granted a privilege to publish French maps in the Netherlands in 1690, and printed his first work there in 1693.
