Skogman's ..Voyage Around the World (inc. Hawaii) - 2 Volumes with 3 Maps & 20 Lithographs
This first edition work is Carl Johan Alfred Skogman's Fregatten Eugenies Resa Omkring Jorden Aren 1851-1853, under Befal af C.A. Virgin or The Frigate Eugenie's Voyage Around the World in the Years 1851-1853, under the command of C.A. Virgin. The work was published in Stockholm by Adolf Bonnier between 1854 and 1855.
The work is published in two volumes with 3 folding maps, 20 lithographs mostly in color, and in-text woodcut illustrations. The volumes are bound in contemporary half calf, gilt lettering and decoration to spine. This is a beautifully illustrated voyage including plates of Buenos Aires, Honolulu, San Francisco, Tonga, Malaya, and Hawaii (Sandwich Islands). The chapters relating to Hawaii and South America have been translated into English and Spanish. The appendices include a section on whaling in the Pacific Ocean. (Hill 2004)
Lt. Carl Johan Alfred Skogman (1820-1907) served as the ship's astronomer and wrote the official account of the Eugenie's voyage around the world. It was captained by Christian Adolph Virgin with an accompaniment of members of the Swedish Academy of Sciences that specialized in botany, anthropology, and more. The voyage landed in South America, the Pacific, Tahiti, the Cook Islands, Samoa, etc., the Cape of Good Hope, Jamestown, the Galapagos, Chile, Panama, Rio, Valparaiso, Callao, Tonga, Sydney Australia, Honolulu, and San Francisco.
