Item Overview
Description:
Jansson - Map of the East Coast of America from Carolinas to Nova Scotia [Nova Belgica and Anglia Nova]
This handsome map of northeast America is entitled Nova Belgica and Anglia Nova. It was published by Jan Jansson in Amsterdam in 1644.
The map served as a reference point for mapping the Dutch and British colonies in North America. It expanded upon Johannes de Laet's map of 1630, mapping northward to include a Great Lake. It has been potentially noted as the first map to show a complete Lake Superior, though it is debated and more likely represents Lake Huron. (Karpinski) Laet's map was the first to name Manhattan, New Amsterdam, the North River (Hudson), and South River (Delaware).
Jan Janssonius (also known as Johann or Jan Jansson or Janszoon) (1588-1664) was part of an important family of Dutch publishers, printers, and booksellers. They were responsible for many important publications. Jan Jansson was a noted geographer in his own right. He married the daughter of another prominent mapmaker, Jodocus Hondius, and also worked with her brothers Henricus & Jodocus II.
Paper Size: ~ 21 1/4" by 17" (Fold Out)
Paper Type or Special Features: Engraving with Professional Hand-coloring
The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. There may some minor offset due to the fold out nature of the plate. Generally considered excellent condition for the age. The map has been flattened, some expert restoration. There is a repaired closed tear shown in the close up picture held to light in the listing. There may be a few minor imperfections or faint marks to be expected with age. Please review the images carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
