Chatelain's Atlas Historique - Seven Volumes with 281 Engravings - This attractive and historic seven volume work with 281 engravings is Henri Abraham Chatelain's Atlas Historique, ou Nouvelle Introduction a l'Histoire, a la Chronologie a l'Geographie Ancienne & Moderne; Representee dans de Nouvelles Cartes, ou l'on remarque l'Etablissement des Etats & Empires du Monde, leur Duree, leur Chute, & leurs differents Gouvernements... . The firt edition work was published by the author in Amsterdam by Freres Chatelain between 1705 and 1721. The volumes are bound in later nineteenth-century half red morocco, red cloth boards, spine lettered in gilt in six gilt compartments. It includes engraved allegorical title page or frontispieces to volumes I, II, IV, V, and VII. There are 281 engravings including maps, genealogical tables, historical scenes, views of towns or cities, and inset vignettes of arms and portraits. The work includes the celebrated large folio, four sheet map of the Americas. The text was compiled by Gueudeville & Garillon. The maps were completed by Chatelain with some influenced by Guillaume de l'Isle, Dapper, Chardin, le Bruyn, Le Hay, and others. Atlas Historique was a highly ambitious and groundbreaking work covering genealogy, cosmography, topography, heraldry, and chronology. It was intended for the general public and the increased fascination with the recently conquered colonies and the new discoveries. Chatelain's maps are an outstanding example of the golden age of French mapmaking. Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743) was a Huguenot or protestant pastor originally from Paris. He was the son of a wealthy Parisian merchant who brought the Spanish use of gold and silver stitching to Paris. He would become best known as a Dutch cartographer and his publication and of Atlas Historique which included numerous maps and engravings depicting geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography.
