Bidspirit auction | RARE Early Westmoreland Hen on
RARE Early Westmoreland Hen on Sleigh - This two-piece novelty covered dish is crafted from opaque white milk glass and is attributed to the Westmoreland Specialty Glass Company. The piece is modeled in the form of a nesting hen resting atop a sleigh. The lid consists of a molded hen with detailed feathering, while the base is shaped as a sleigh featuring integrated runners and a scalloped rim. The sides of the sleigh are decorated with embossed shell and scroll motifs. Traces of original cold-painted accents in black and gold-toned pigment remain visible, though much has worn away. A partial vintage paper label is present on the underside of the lid, showing text including Price 15 cents and references to sizes. This style of novelty dish was a popular production of American glass houses during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
