Holocaust. Shu”t Yerushat Pleitah. Budapest, 1946 Collection of responsa from prominent Hungarian rabbis, most who were butchered and killed in sanctification of Hashem’s name during the Holocaust of Hungarian Jewry in 1944. The idea of publishing this book was suggested before the Holocaust and was intended to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Chevrat Shas in Budapest. Rabbis throughout the country sent responsa regarding practical questions, but when war broke out the printing stopped and it was distributed after the Holocaust incomplete. Rabbi Yissacher Shlomo Teichtal’s responsa regarding settling Eretz Yisroel is cut off in the middle, see p. 104. Includes practical questions that arose at that time, including questions regarding new technology, such as machine made matzah, electricity and telephone on Shabbat, air travel above a cemetery, genizah of secular papers that included some holy words and the like. Noted on the title page: Printing began before the decree and remains interrupted and incomplete. As aforementioned, this was intended to be a festive, commemorative edition but instead serves as a memorial for the Hungarian Torah giants who were killed in sanctification of God's name. The book ends with a list of the names of Hungarian rabbis who were killed in 1944. The list includes 350 Hungarian rabbis who died in the Holocaust. ********* Budapest, 1946 – first edition.
