17th Century. Sefer Nitzachon - Altdorf, 1644 - First Edition Jewish Classic — Anti-Christian Polemics Refutations to Christian claims and explanations of stories and ideas that could cause doubts in religious belief, edited and arranged in the order of the Tanach by Rav Yom Tov Lipman of Mülhausen. Polemical works were books of refutations that Jewish leaders were forced to write by monarchs or governments together with priests or Christian scholars to refute their claims against the Jewish religion. Disputations were always dangerous and sensitive and required astuteness to decide what to say and what not to say. At times, disputations were held with the imminent threat of expulsion or pogroms to the Jews in the area. In his Sefer Hanitzachon , Rav Yom Tov Lipman provides a guide for these disputations with clear delineation of what to say and how to answer the Christian claims. Sefer Hanitzachon is the most prominent polemical work and was reprinted in various editions and languages. Two title pages, the first Hebrew one is decorated with beautiful copperplate engravings.
