Rav Aharon of Apta was a talmid of the Chozeh of Lublin who devoted himself to the dissemination of the Torah of the Baal Shem Tov and his disciples. He was one of the earliest writers of Chassidus and the first to record the stories of the tzaddikim. (His Kesser Shem Tov was printed twenty years before Shivchei HaBesht.) The author concealed his name, and sometimes even his sources, in the work. For example, he cites from the Noam Elimelech and Darchei Tzedek as ”in the name of holy ones, ” but mentions the Tanya, which was printed three years earlier, many times.
