נחום ט' סוקולוב [1859-1936], נשיא ההסתדרות הציונית העולמית החמישי, מנהיג ציוני ומדינאי. סוקולוב היה יד ימינו של הרצל, ולאחר מכן ממנהיגיה של התנועה הציונית. השקפתו, המפוזרת גם במסותיו ובמאמריו, לא הצטמצמה בד' אמות של ציונות, וכוללת עולם ומלואו: יהדות ותרבות, מוסר ודת, ספרות ובלשנות, אמנות ויופי, היסטוריה ופסיכולוגיה, פילוסופיה ומדע, מנהגים ונימוסים, ותכונות עמים וארצות ומקומות וטיפוסים ואישים. בכל דבר חיפש חוקים כלליים שיכוונו אל הנקודה הפנימית ואל המעלות המעשיות המוציאות אותה אל הפועל.
