Supplement to The Graphic Christmas Number 1888 Up and Down after W. L. Thomas R.I. - A Victorian large-format colour chromolithograph supplement issued with the Christmas edition of The Graphic newspaper in 1888. The print comprises two sentimental narrative panels after paintings by William Luson Thomas, R.I. (1830 to 1900). The lower panel, titled Down, illustrates a young girl confined to bed with a collie dog at her side. The corresponding verse states: And though he woos with many a wistful wile, / Her dearest friend can scarce provoke a smile. The upper panel, titled Up, depicts the girl recovered, seated and playing with a doll while embracing the dog. The verse states: But mark the change! When Health resumes its reign, / Dolly is clasped in loving arms again;.
