A Late Victorian or Edwardian Vernacular Hardwood Side Chair - This single side chair is designed in a late Victorian or Edwardian vernacular style, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The frame is constructed from a dark-stained hardwood, likely beech or a similar close-grained timber, featuring a high back with five vertical slats set between the uprights. The back is surmounted by a decoratively shaped and scrolled top rail. The chair is supported by turned front legs and square-section rear legs, which are joined by an H-pattern arrangement of turned stretchers. The seat is currently finished with a square of hessian fabric secured with upholstery tacks. Standard mortise and tenon joinery is used for the back slats and rails. A small white rectangular adhesive tag with the character 1 is present on the left upright of the chair back. No other signatures, factory stamps, or maker's marks are visible on the frame.
