A Scottish Mahogany Longcase Clock by James Whitelaw, Edinburgh, Early 19th Century - A 19th-century Scottish longcase clock, the dial signed Ja. Whitelaw Edinburgh. The mahogany case is embellished with flame mahogany veneers and boxwood or satinwood string inlay. The hood features a swan-neck pediment decorated with two brass rosettes and a central turned brass finial, flanked by fluted columns with brass capitals. The arched, white-painted dial is decorated with a floral and fruit still life in the lunette. The main chapter ring displays black Roman numerals for the hours and an outer track for minutes. The dial includes a subsidiary seconds dial below the twelve o'clock position and a date aperture above the six o'clock position. The hands are crafted from ornate pierced metal. The trunk contains a shaped door, and the clock sits upon a plinth base. The movement is a mechanical weight-driven type, characteristic of the period.
