Late 19th Century Brass Drum Microscope in Fitted Mahogany Case - A 19th-century brass drum or pocket compound microscope designed for portable field use. The instrument features a cylindrical brass body with a sliding-tube mechanism for focusing and a side aperture to allow light to reach the specimen stage. The microscope is mounted on a circular brass base. It is housed in a fitted mahogany case with a dark fabric-lined base and internal wooden dividers. Included within the case are two additional brass objective lenses and remnants of specimen slides. The box is secured with brass hinges and a simple metal catch. No manufacturer's mark or signature is visible on the brass components.
