A Collection of Japanese Gyokuzan Satsuma Moriage Earthenware - This collection of Japanese Satsuma moriage earthenware, marked Gyokuzan, comprises a baluster vase, a circular lidded box, two handled mugs, and a teapot body. Each piece is crafted from cream-coloured earthenware with a characteristic fine crackle glaze. The decoration features hand-painted scenes depicting Arhats or Immortals, surrounded by intricate floral and geometric borders. The items employ the moriage technique, featuring heavily applied raised enamel detailing and extensive gilt highlighting. The vase and lidded box are decorated on a neutral ground, while the mugs and teapot body feature a ferruginous red-brown ground. The base of the vase displays a blue underglaze square seal mark transcribed as Satsuma Gyokuzan. Vase height: approximately 15-20 cm.
