Reinhard Heydrich Signed Book
SS Gruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich – his signature in “The German Warships 1815 – 1936“, dated “5 December 1937. The endpaper with a calligraphic inscription “In memory of the first successful maneuvers in 1923 as midshipmen on the sailing training ship ‘Niobe’, including Heydrich’s ink signature, together with seven other signatures of former midshipmen. The ‘Niobe’ was a was a tall ship used by the Reichsmarine to train cadets and aspiring NCOs. She sank during a white squall on 26 July 1932, with the loss of 69 lives. A memorial monument to Niobe was erected at Timmendorfer Strand on Fehmarn island, within view of the site of the sinking. The later Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich joined the Reichsmarine as a midshipman on March 30, 1922, received his lieutenant’s commission in 1926 and, after his service on the liner Schleswig-Holstein, was promoted to first lieutenant. In 1931 he was dishonorably discharged from the navy because – although he was already engaged to his future wife Lina – he is said to have made a promise of marriage to another woman. Shortly afterwards he joined the SS and the NSDAP and was already head of the Sipo at the time of this signature.
