Third Reich Reichsbahn Eagle Fragments - Third Reich Reichsbahn eagle fragments, excavated recently in Poland and understood to derive from a train destroyed in the closing stages of the war. The German State Railway (Deutsche Reichsbahn) played a central logistical role during the Third Reich era, and eagle emblems of this type were affixed to locomotives, rolling stock, and railway property throughout the period. These fragments offer a tangible, if incomplete, link to that wartime rail infrastructure and its violent end.The Deutsche Reichsbahn was the state railway operator of Germany from 1920 and, following annexation, extended its network across occupied territories including Poland, where it operated lines seized from the Polish state railways. During the Second World War it functioned as a critical instrument of military logistics, troop movement, and the deportation of civilians, including transports to ghettos and camps under German occupation. By the closing months of the war, retreating German forces and Allied air power caused extensive destruction of rolling stock and rail infrastructure across Poland, leaving wreckage of the kind from which these fragments are said to derive.
