Dutch 'Jood' Star of David Cloth Badge - WWII Holocaust Era - A yellow cloth six-pointed Star of David badge with the word ”Jood” (Dutch for ”Jew”) printed/stenciled in black pseudo-Hebraic lettering across the center. This type was mandated for Jewish identification in the Netherlands under German occupation during WWII. The badge is cut from woven yellow fabric with black outlined star points. No maker markings are visible; construction and lettering style are consistent with the known Dutch-issued examples.Following the German occupation of the Netherlands, an order issued in April 1942 required all Jewish residents aged six and over to wear a yellow star bearing the word ”Jood” visibly on their clothing whenever in public. Distribution was administered through the Jewish Council (Joodse Raad), which was compelled to issue the badges to the Jewish population against payment and ration coupons, as part of the broader system of registration and control that preceded mass deportations to transit camps such as Westerbork and onward to killing centres in occupied Poland. The badge served as a tool of public marking and social isolation, facilitating identification, exclusion from public life, and ultimately deportation. Such badges are among the most direct surviving artifacts of the Nazi persecution and genocide of Dutch Jewry, over seventy percent of whom did not survive the war.
