German ”Trommler” Zigaretten Cardboard Kepi - Sturm-Zigaretten-Fabrik Dresden - A shaped cardboard advertising kepi for Trommler 3-Pfennig cigarettes, produced by Sturm-Zigaretten-Fabrik, Dresden. Printed in yellow, navy blue, and gold with a decorative rope border, central roundel logo, and lettering reading ”Trommler 3-Pfennig Zigarette mit zeitgemäßen Uniformbildern” and ”Sturm-Zigaretten-Fabrik-Dresden.” Constructed of lithographed pressboard/cardstock.Cigarette manufacturers in interwar and early Nazi-era Germany widely used novelty packaging and promotional items, including collectible cards and shaped giveaways, to build brand loyalty in a highly competitive tobacco market centred in Dresden, one of the country's major cigarette-producing cities. The ”Trommler” brand's reference to ”zeitgemäße Uniformbilder” (contemporary uniform pictures) reflects the popular practice of inserting militaria-themed collector cards depicting uniforms and insignia into cigarette packets, a marketing device that also served to normalise military imagery in everyday consumer culture of the period. Sturm-Zigaretten-Fabrik was one of many small-to-mid-sized Dresden tobacco firms operating before the industry's later wartime consolidation and disruption.
