Third Reich Nazi 5 Reichsmark Silver Coin - German 5 Reichsmark Coin The 5 Reichsmark coin was a large silver denomination issued in Germany from the early 1930s through the Nazi period, continuing a coinage tradition established under the Weimar Republic. After 1933 the design was altered to incorporate National Socialist symbolism alongside the traditional eagle, reflecting the regime's practice of adapting existing state institutions and currency to its own iconography. Such coins remained in general circulation as legal tender until the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945. The 5 Reichsmark was a large-format silver coin first introduced in the Weimar Republic and continued into the Nazi era, when several designs incorporated the swastika alongside the traditional Reichsadler. It circulated as ordinary legal tender for everyday transactions throughout Germany during the 1930s and war years, illustrating how the regime embedded its symbolism into routine state institutions rather than replacing them outright. Coins of this type ceased to be valid currency with Germany's defeat and the subsequent Allied occupation reforms of 1945–48.
