German WWII Mother's Cross Third Class (Bronze), in Issue Packet - German WWII Cross of Honor of the German Mother, Third Class (Bronze), in Issue Packet A Mutterehrenkreuz in bronze, third class, awarded to mothers of four or more children. The cross remains in its original tissue wrapping, retaining the reverse date ”16. Dezember 1938” and facsimile signature of Adolf Hitler, and is accompanied by its issue envelope printed ”Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter, Dritte Stufe” with a printed sender's label reading ”August Sohst, Oberstein/Nahe.” The Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter was instituted on 16 December 1938 as part of Nazi Germany's pronatalist policy, intended to encourage large families and honour motherhood within the regime's racial and social ideology. It was awarded annually, chiefly on 12 August (the birthday of Hitler's mother, Klara), in three grades: bronze for four to five children, silver for six to seven, and gold for eight or more. Recipients were vetted for ”racial” and political suitability, and the award carried social privileges such as deference in public settings, though it was formally abolished after 1945.
