A Hollywood Motion Picture & Television Museum Original Background. - (1964) A rare original production background, likely from a promotional film for the never-completed Hollywood Motion Picture and Television Museum. Titled ”Concept, ” the nearly-lost film was hosted by Edward G. Robinson and not only showcased plans for the museum, but featured original animation of Mickey Mouse as well as clips of Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Yogi Bear, and Mr. Magoo. Live-action clips from major motion pictures were also edited in, including Bing Crosby's ”Holiday Inn, ” seen on the left side of the background. Plans and an impressive model of the museum were unveiled at the Disneyland Hotel during a convention in 1961. Disney lent its facilities to the production team, and Disney Legend Ollie Johnston animated Mickey Mouse for the film. Multiple studios' work are featured in the background, including Warner Bros.' ”The Adventures of Robin Hood, ” Universal's ”Flash Gordon, ” and RKO's ”King Kong.” The hand-painted background includes cut-out elements that have been adhered to the paper, including Crosby's head. The marquee on this painting features the name Allen Wade, a longtime Warner Bros. animator who worked on this project. The museum, which was intended to have a theater, wax museum, and a film preservation room, got as far as groundbreaking before ballooning costs, a contentious landowner, and dwindling public support torpedoed the project. This is an incredibly rare piece of art from animation and Hollywood history. Measuring 10.5” x 13.5”, the background is in very good condition with light scratches and wear from production use.
