Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. The depicted Marie Madeleine Platzmann had been married to the silk manufacturer Johann Platzmann, with whom she had three children, since 1752. Together with both portraits registered by Berckenhagen, of which one is presevered at the Braunschweig Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Graff has painted three identically sized versions in total. Hence, Börsch-Supan supposes in his report that each work was intended for one child each.
