In her certificate von Hellerman pints out the uniqueness of the present work in the work of the artist: Always interested in new techniques for his art, von Kügelgen published a lithographic series with views of the Crimea in 1827 and dedicated it to Alexandra Feodorowna, wife of tsar Nicholas I of Russia. One of these very successful sheets, namely the view of Partenit shown here, was additionally reworked in oil. For the tsar family Kügelgen worked for decades in St. Petersburg after he had settled there together with his twin brother as painters in 1798 and has acquired fame. While his brother moved to Dresden just a few years later and was thriving as a portrait and historcial painter there, Carl remained in Russia. For the tsar he crafted different extensive series with landscapes, amongst others also with motifs of the Crimea from where the view of the small town at the southern coast of the peninsula stems.
