However, the white strip at the bottom of the image clearly refers to the media context from which Gerhard Richter took the motif for his photo painting. The artist had the edition, which was produced as a color photograph on laserchrome paper, mounted behind Antelio glass. This coated material has a very strong mirror effect, so that viewers are reflected in the image and become part of the motif. The edition shows eight P-51 Mustangs, American fighter planes of the United States Army Air Forces from World War II. As can be seen from the insignia on the military aircraft, these planes were also used by the British Royal Air Force. Art historian Uwe M. Schneede explains that a motif such as the one used by Richter is “by no means a time-critical image, but rather one that subjectively captures what moved the times.” This is because the first half of the 1960s saw the beginning of both Germany's self-critical examination of its Nazi history and the heavy air raids on Vietnam, which made war a subject of remembrance and reflection.
