- Aesthetic presentation of the motif through special framing
Ambivalence of realism and abstraction
The motif of the 2009 print “September” is based on a photograph of Gerhard Richter's oil painting of the same name from 2005, which is housed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This painting, in turn, is based on a photograph that the artist found in the magazine “Der Spiegel” showing the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001. During the painting process, Richter scraped parts of the still-wet oil paint off the surface with a long knife until the white primer showed through in places. The result is an image with a strong ambivalence between realism and abstraction.
The digital inkjet print on vinyl foil that reproduces this motif differs significantly from the oil painting in that it has a different color scheme. In addition, the print graphic is presented between two glass panes, without a frame and with spacers on the wall, giving it the appearance of something floating. The edition is therefore not merely a print graphic reproduction of the painting, but an independent limited edition work with its own character.
