Flemish School: Susanna and the two Old People - FLEMISH SCHOOL 1st h. 17th c. Title: Susanna and the two Old People. Technique: Oil on copper. Measurement: 40.5 x 32.5cm. Frame: Framed. Reverse: On the copper plate is the maker’s mark ‘CK’. On the frame are numerous old collection seals (including those of the House of Salm-Salm) as well as an old label providing details of provenance: Archbishop of Prague and Cardinal Wilhelm Florentius von Salm-Salm (1745-1810), Prince Constantin zu Salm-Salm, Count of Salm-Hoogstraten. The painting shows a clear affinity with the works of Artus Wolffort (Antwerp 1581–1642). For example, Susanna’s ermine-trimmed cloak appears in a mirror-image version by Wolffort (RKD, ill. no. 243282). Similarly, the highly characteristic rendering of the old man’s wrinkled skin corresponds to that in his depiction of Saint Ambrose (RKD, ill. no. 242606). The engraver’s mark ‘CK’ on the reverse also points to the Southern Netherlands of the first half of the 17th century. Provenance: - Private ownership, Germany..
