In the summer of 1836, the young painter of Spanish descent, whose name was Diaz de la Pena, discovered the Forest of Fontainebleau. The village of Barbizon, where he lived that summer and in subsequent summers alongside his fellow painters, gave its name to what is arguably the most famous French school of painting of the 19th century, which shaped the shift towards realism. His fascination with the local natural landscape is reflected in this early painting, as is his enthusiasm for the exoticism of the Orient, which characterised the poetry of the time. The painting, depicting an Oriental gathering around the well-travelled Ben Emeck as he recounts his incredible adventures, was exhibited in 1838 at the most important art exhibition of the time, the Paris Salon, thereby underscoring its significance within the painter’s oeuvre..
