Description: A parure with delicate floral motifs from the era of Berlin iron casting in the early 19th century. Under the slogan ”I gave gold for iron”, the women of Prussia were urged to hand in their gold jewellery to help finance the war against Napoleon I, exchanging it for delicate pieces made of black-patinated iron. What initially served as a wearable symbol of patriotism became hugely fashionable in the decade following the Wars of Liberation. The term “Fer de Berlin” refers to the iron jewellery that was highly sought-after throughout Europe at the time.
