Bidspirit auction | Prestigious Diamond-Order of an Iranian
Prestigious Diamond-Order of an Iranian Ambassador - Origin: Presumably France, Paris. Date: Ca. 1900/1915. Material: 585/- yellow gold, silver, tested. Weight: 88 g. Measurement: 12.3 x 10.2 cm. Diamonds: In the centre 1 diamond in old-cut, ca. 2.6 ct, K-M/P; ca. 430 diamonds in old- and rose-cut, in total ca. 50.0–60.0 ct, K-N/SI-P. Gemstones: 32 round, faceted red gemstones, presumably rubies, Ø ca. 1.3–2.5 mm. Description: Persia (Qajar period) Order of the Sun and the Lion, breast star. Exquisitely crafted breast star of the Order of the Sun and the Lion in a radiating design with a crown at the top, set with numerous diamonds. In the centre a large old-cut diamond, is surrounded by concentric diamond rings; the rays are further accentuated by small rubies. The reverse bears an indistinct manufacturer’s hallmark “ARND” probably of French origin. With a horizontal pin and hook. Enclosed is an old handwritten card bearing the name “Samad Khan Momtaz os-Saltaneh”, a prominent Persian diplomat and envoy in Paris in the late 19th and early 20th century. A direct attribution cannot be verified, but appears plausible in the temporal and historical context and is consistent with the known practice of having such insignia made for high-ranking dignitaries in Paris. This example is likely belonged to a high class of the order, possibly Grand Cross or Grand Officer, as suggested by the elaborate diamond setting and the high-quality craftsmanship.
