Hematite-Ruby-Diamond-Necklace - Origin: Syria, Damascus. Date: 1980. Material: 585/- rose gold, tested. Weight: 84 g. Measurement: length ca. 38.0 cm, hematite pendant ca. 3.5 x 4.4 cm cm. Diamonds: Ca. 59 foil-set diamond roses Ø ca. 2.6–6.2 mm, 2 small diamonds missing. Gemstones: Ca. 96 rubies in square- and baguette-cut in total ca. 3.4 ct. Description: A necklace of gold-set silk cords with a ribbed ball clasp and two clasps set with rubies and diamonds, hanging from the centre is a hematite plaque, surrounded by diamond roses and rubies, featuring an intaglio depiction of Dionysus and Ariadne on a chariot drawn by panthers, surmounted by a theatre mask. The gem probably originates from the Near East, Ugarit, 1st millennium BC. According to the consignor, the antique hematite gem was acquired in 1980 in the Suq al-Hamidiya, Damascus, and subsequently set by a jeweller in Damascus.
