Pair of centerpieces with Triton and Nereid - ITALY Title: Pair of centerpieces with Triton and Nereid. Origin: Probably Venice. Date: 17th/ 18th century. Material: Bronze, cast, chiselled and fire-gilded. Mounted on a velvet-covered plinth. Measurement: Height: 41.5 cm each, width: 19.5 cm. Description: On a trefoil plinth decorated with dolphins and female mascarons, three seated lions serve as shield-bearers. In the centre, a tall shaft with C-curves and volutes, supported by three cherubs. On top, a small trefoil-shaped, slightly rounded bowl. Crowned by the figure of Neptune or Venus Marina, each accompanied by a dolphin. Each mounted on a suitable, velvet-covered plinth. The two table centrepieces, which resemble fountain structures, are comparable to Venetian works in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Particularly noteworthy here are a pair of large saliers, whose trefoil design and crowning figures of Zeus and Venus bear a striking resemblance. Condition: The original coats of arms are missing; Triton’s right arm is damaged and the figure shows significant verdigris. Provenance: - Private collection Cologne.
