Three-tier coin scale - METTMANN , MATTHIAS Cologne Title: Three-tier coin scale. Date: Dated 1650. Material: A box made of pear wood. An iron balance with brass pans and green cords. Brass weights. Measurement: 4 x 15 x 8,5 cm. Mark: On the lid is inscribed: ‘C'est Balance et pois sont faiet par Maistre Matthes Medman demeurant en a Doll en Cologne An. 1650’. Scales bearing a master's mark. Description: Rectangular box with ornamental embossed and engraved decoration. In the drawer, marked with weight indications in black ink, there are 10 weights bearing coin designs; a further 15 weights are located in the lid compartment, and 15 more in the bottom drawer. Beneath a small drawer in the main drawer are 2 balancing weights. The beam balance with one round and one triangular weighing pan. Provenance: - Old Private Collection, Rhineland.
