Large coin scale - METTMAN , MATTHIAS Cologne Title: Large coin scale. Date: Dated 1654. Material: A box made of pear wood. An iron balance with brass pans and beige cords. Brass weights. Measurement: 3 x 25,5 x 13 cm. Mark: On the inside of the lid, inscribed: ‘Made by M. Matthias Mettmann, resident at Cöllen on the Deul, in the year 1654’. Description: A large, rectangular box with ornamental embossed and engraved decoration. Inside the drawer, 40 weights bearing coin designs, with their weights marked in black ink. Three balancing weights beneath the lid. The beam balance features one round and one triangular weighing pan. Tweezers inserted on the right-hand side. On the inside of the lid, a steel engraving has been glued in to supplement the master’s signature: “Accurately calibrated scales and weights made by Master Franciscus Constantin Brewer, wheelwright, residing in Collen at Bürgerstraße 1728”.
