Date: First half of the 18th century. Material: Wool and silk in polychrome. Lined with linen. Measurement: 367×324 cm. Mark: At the bottom right edge, the Brussels city mark ‘BB’ and the signature ‘P.VAN.DEN.HECKE’, both woven in. Description: The surrounding border features dense acanthus leaves, with shell motifs at the corners. The large central panel depicts Psyche and her four attendants as she gazes at herself in a mirror. In the background is a park landscape with fountains and pools. In the top left-hand corner, Athena and Hera float on a cloud, facing one another in conversation. Provenance: - Held for over 30 years by a foundation administered by the City of Mannheim (previously in private ownership in Mannheim). This was commissioned by Maria Theresa in 1750, featuring her coat of arms, as a diplomatic gift from van den Hecke, based on designs by J. van Orley and A. Coppens.
