With an engraved portrait of the author (by Saenredam after Hendrik Goltzius). Printed in gothic script, in Dutch. Age-toned due to paper quality, unobtrusive damp staining in the corner of a few lvs. Still a good and complete copy. Old calf binding, rubbed, spine and corners worn, red edges. The second part: Uutlegghing op den Metamorphosis Pub. Ovij Nasonis .. Seer dienstich den Schilders, Dichters en Constbeminders... Rare first edition of this important work by Carel van Mander (1548-1606), one of the highlights of Dutch renaissance literature, and the first work on the theory and history of art to be published in the Netherlands. It treats the lives of classical, Italian, and Dutch painters, including Van Mander's contemporaries Hendrik Goltzius, Abraham Bloemaert, Jacques de Gheyn, David Vinckeboons, etc. The second part discusses the illustration of Ovid’s Metamorphoses and is still an important source for our knowledge of the iconography of the period.
