With small margins and watermark: Foolscap. An exquisitly clear and strong 17th century impression with traces of burr on the Apostles and distant buildings. References: Bartsch 71; Seidlitz 71; Hind 122; White-Boon 71, New Hollstein 127: first state (of five): before the two dots in the upper right corner and before the applied shadows and three horizontal lines of shadow added to the right side of the bottom rim of the bucket. The plate is still in existence and is in the possession of Nowell-Usticke (1967). While traveling from Judea to Galilee, Christ and the apostles interrupted their journey in Samaria, pausing to rest by Jacob’s well. While Jesus was waiting alone, a Samaritan woman came to fetch water, and in the corse of their dialogue Jesus revealed to her as the Messiah (John 4:5-42). After he had revealed himself, the woman left him to tell the news. In the background are Jesus' disciples. ”Christ and the Samaritan Woman” was one of Rembrandt's favorite subjects.
